Amsterdam, 1667, Spanish text edition. 385 x 505.
Fine original wash colour, highlighted in gold..
A fine map of the area of northern France around the town of Beauvais, with exceptional colour: the title and scale cartouches are highlighted in gold, as are the major towns. The Spanish edition of the "Atlas Mayor" is the rarest edition: when the Blaeu printing works burnt down in 1672 the final volume was in the press and was destroyed. It is interesting that the text for the Spanish edition had begun as early as 1658, the date on a Spanish dedication: this is the earliest date on any preface or dedication of any of Blaeu's Atlas Major in any language.

The Empire of Charlemagne. Extends from Ireland to Turkey and from Russia to Portugal. Legend has it that Charlemagne made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem towards the latter end of the 10th century. That he and his warriors were endowed with great deeds of earlier kings and heroes of the Frankish Kingdom, although in some cases these feats were not chronologically correct. Charlemagne's wars in Italy, Spain and Saxony formed part of the myth and also against the Slavs. The popular belief that he was the champion of Christianity against the creed of Mohammed. In 1164 he was canonized and in parts of Europe there were festivals in his honour, although I am not sure if this continues today.

The account below the engraving goes on to record ...that on the 29th May at midnight, after a most dreadful storm of thunder and rain, the Prussian army by the signal of a sky rocket, thrown up for that purpose by the King's Battery, began to fire upon the town from one battery on this side of the Moldau, and from three on the other. These batteries continued firing incessantly till the 8th June, when the whole New Town was reduced to one great heap of smoking rubbish and only a few houses were left standing in the Jew's quarter.
