Venice, 1688. 460 x 290. at widest point.

Vincenzo Coronelli was one of Italy's illustrious cartographers and globe-makers. He was also one of the most prolific. A member of the Franciscan order allowed him the time to study, research, draw and engrave many maps. In all he produced over 400 maps. In the early 1680s Coronelli constructed two vast globes for Louis XIV, terrestrial and celestial, they were over fifteen feet in diameter and large enough for people to enter by means of a door. The globes were drawn and painted by hand, unlike the smaller printed version of 1688. These gores form a globe of 110 centimetres in diameter. They are engraved to a very high standard and Coronelli included important explorations, along with ships, animals and fishing scenes that form part of the decoration. SHIRLEY: Mapping of the World, 537.

Sir Walter Raleigh is visited by and old king, from the 'Grand Voyages' by De Bry. At the port of Morequito a pilot was sent to look for the king of Aromaia. The king came before noon on the following day having travelled on foot fourteen English miles, and was to return the same day, and this at the age of 110. Many women and children came with him to wonder at the English and to bring victuals, which they did in plenty, such as venison, pork, chicken, fowl, fish, with divers sorts of excellent fruits and roots and great abundance of 'pinas' (pineapples). They also brought bread and wine and a sort of 'paraquitos' no bigger than wrens. German text on the verso.
