A fine and detailed map of Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire. Published by Thomas Bowles, Robert Sayer, John Tinney and John Bowles (1st state). The production history of the 'Large English Atlas' was not an easy one and appeared to be plagued with financial difficulties. In 1752 or 1753, with only 28 county plates completed, Hinton finally sold his ailing project to the printseller John Tinney. In 1755 or 1756 Tinney was joined in a partnership by Thomas Bowles, John Bowles and Son and Robert Sayer. Their imprint was to be added to the new maps for publication in 1758, although any book production still lacked a title-page. John Tinney died in 1761 and it wasn't until 1762 that the atlas was finally completed together with the title-page with his name omitted. This map is an early example and a pre-compl
atlas issue.

During medieval times the fenland villages of Dithmarschen enjoyed a long period of self rule and later in the 15th century a peasants' republic was formed. Several times noblemen and their mercenaries tried to subdue the independent mini state, but without any success. In 1500 the greatest of these battles took place at Hemmingstedt,
where the outnumbered peasants defeated the army of Holstein and Kalmari Union.
It was not until 1559 that the peasants were forced to give up their autonomy.

Europa Prima Pars Terræ In Forma Virginis.
Magdeburg, 1581-. 270 x 370.
Uncoloured; woodcut, very light soiling to margins, otherwise an exceptionally fine example of a map that generally has problems.
Heinrich Bunting [1545 - 1606] was a Professor of Theology at Hanover. He published a Biblically based travel book ('Itinerarium Sacrea Scriptura...') (1581-85) of the known world and included some highly sought after curiosity maps. This famous map of Europe in the form of a Queen, but entitled 'virgin'', was first produced by Joannes Bucius in 1537. Orientated with the west at the top with Spain as a crowned head to the left and Italy is represented by the right arm holding an orb which is Sicily. Eastern Europe forms the dress. Some suggest that the image in fact represents not a woman, but the Emperor Charles V, with the Imperial power of Spain that was at the time the 'crown of Europe'. The Sceptre points towards the British Isles. HILL: 'Cartographical Curiosities' p. 39; Map Collectors Circle 1 no.
