HOLLAR, W.

[No title]. A True Relation of Capt. Kempthorne's Engagement, in the Mary-Rose, with seven Algier Men of War.

[London, c.1670]. 360 x 405.
Uncoloured; restored and laid on thick paper, overall age-toning, but altogether presentable and now quite stable.
On a calm sea six pirate ships in a line are passing to windward of the two English warships and firing broadsides in turn. The English ships are protecting three merchant-men to leeward. In the lower left corner a French ship is sailing away, and on the horizon another pirate vessel pursues a solitary merchantman. From Ogiliby's 'Africa'. An incident at sea that Hollar himself experienced on his way back to England on 29 December 1669 after a year and a half spent in Tangier. There is a painting by Adrian van Diest (1655-1704) of the Mary Rose and seven Algerian pirates, which must surely have been based on this print, since the position of the ships is identical.

He was a Bohemian etcher, who lived in England for much of his life. He was born in Prague, and died in London, being buried at St Margaret's Church, Westminster.
