Finely hand coloured; excellent condition over all with only very minor age-toning to the margins
The only known map engraved by Gerard Mercator's grandson (better known for his engraving of the Drake silver medal while resident in London in 1589). First published in Duisburg, 1595, it shows North and South America within a sphere, with a large New Guinea and "Terra Australis Nondum Cognita". A clear North-West Passage is shown; the St Lawrence river runs past the unknown Great Lakes to rise in a mountain chain mid-continent; the mythical "Friesland" is shown near Iceland; South America has a distinctive bulge in the south-west (removed from Ortelius' map 1587), and at the North Pole is the island invented for magnetic north. Around the map is an extensive floral pattern with roundels in each corner, one for the title, the others for inset maps of the Gulf of Mexico, Cuba and Haiti. BURDEN: 87. KOEMAN: Me 19.

A map of Russia, probably engraved by Petrus Kęrius. Shows the area from the Baltic States across to Siberia, with a strange row of buildings and trees forming a line from north of the Black Sea almost to Sarataff (Saratov). This line closely follows the route taken by Giovanni de Piano Carpini in the mid 13th century. Carpini had been sent by Pope Innocent IV to persuade the Mogul rulers to give up war, and to convert them to the Christian faith, he returned to Europe having failed in his mission. From the French text edition. Shows Greece, Turkey and Arabia, with an ornate title cartouche including a portrait of the Sultan Mohumet. The text refers to such things as... The Countrie is for the most part fruitfull in graine, as wheate, barlie, oats, winter wheate, beanes, pease, and all manner of pulse. It aboundeth in rice, flaxe and cottons. They have vines, whose fruit they make use of after divers manners. The Christians make wine of them, & the Turcks prepare a kind of sweete meate, by mingling honey and grapes together, which seemeth allwayes fresh, both to the sight & tast, this they call Vsum Turssi (sic).

Fine original colour; short repaired tear to centrefold and mile scale (hardly visible from the front), light marginal age-toning, otherwise a very good example.
Derived from Capt. John Smith's map, this is a beautifully engraved and decorative map with large decorative banner cartouche and a replica of the Royal Arms surmounted by a crown and circled by the Garter. In the top left corner is an illustration showing Powhatan, an Indian chief, and his natives inside the hut that the legend beneath describes as being the place Capt. Smith was delivered to him prisoner. Along the right side of the map is a large standing figure of an Indian.

A pre-fire prospect of London from Southwark, showing from Whitehall to the Tower of London, with a 43-point key. In the distance can be seen two windmills at Hampstead, and in the foreground the Swan and Globe theatres, and the Bear Garden.

This example is state 13, with Termistian and Panuco and the German title 'Die N|w Welt' moved lower to accommodate Nouus Orbis. An important map of the Americas, first published 1540. For the first time the name "Mare Pacificum" appears on a printed map; Japan appears on the map three years before the first recorded European contact, named "Zipangri", based on the rumours Marco Polo heard while in China, surrounded by "Archipelagus 7448 insular{; Yucatan appears as an island and the Straits of Magellan are named, twenty years after his passage. For decoration the map has a depiction of the ship Victoria, the only surviving ship of Magellan's fleet, in the Pacific, body parts stored by cannibals over Brazil, the flag of Spain over the West Indies and Portugal's in the South Atlantic.

Uncoloured; lightly soiled and minor staining, otherwise good.
Three unusual plans of Japanese cities, Miaco, Osaka and Yedo. Postcard in size and highly detailed with keys and titles in Japanese. Very little information on these can be found but it would appear that they were possibly published by OKADA, Shuntosai, in his shop in Suigetsudo in Kyoto during the Edo-jidai period, which ran from 1603 to 1867. However, these appear to be prints from a copper plate which was quite unusual for Japan and could well be printed in the mid-19th century.
