A fine map of Persia after Gastaldi's map of Asia Minor 1564. An interesting note in the text on verso reads (this is taken from the translation of the English text edition of 1606) - In the year of Christ 1369. There was a certaine pety king amongst the Persians, named 'Sophi', who held the city 'Ardenelim' in his possession. This man bragged that he was descended lineally by his ancestors from 'Musa Cazino', nephew of 'Ali Muhamed'. He, the chalise of Babylon being dead, & the contrary faction maintained by the Turks, suppressed by the Tartars, began more boldly and freely to broach his opinions of religion: and because 'Hocemus', the sonne of Aly. From whom he draweth his pedigree, had twelve sonnes, minding to set some marke or badge upon his sects and disciples, whereby they might be distinguished an own from others, he ordained that they would follow him, and be of his religion, should weare a tire under the vaile, which all the Turks do wind about their heads (they call it 'Tulibant') should be of purple colour, and should hang out the middle of the 'Tulibant' twelve hand breadth. Original colour; printed on two sheets using two plates and joined at some stage, original colour is light, some spotting and soiling, expert restoration to centre of map, old brown tape from an earlier framing, otherwise a good example.
Possibly the earliest map of Northern Africa available today. New copper plates were engraved at Rome for the 1478 edition of Ptolemy's 'Geography', they were more superior in clarity and craftsmanship to those of the earlier Bologna edition. There is evidence that the plates for the 1478 edition were started as early as 1473 or 1474. The printing was done by two skilled German printers; Conrad Sweynheym and his successor Arnold Buckinck. "Until the 1477 edition was definitively dated, this edition was thought to be the oldest engraved atlas. It was printed by Arnoldus Buckinck, and is thought to be the only known book with his imprint. At first the engraving was supervised by a German, Conrad Sweynheym of Main (d. 1477). His method of using a printingpress for the copperplate maps, together with the fine engraving, produced an excellent result. The text was edited by Domitius Calderinus of Verona; he collated various Latin manuscript in the translation by Jacobus Angelus with an ancient Greek Manuscript, which had been emended by Geirgius Gemistus (d. 1450). Calderinus was a careful worker, and his edition had been much admired for the correctness of the text, the fine typography and the brilliant engraving. Christopher Colombus owned a copy of this edition, which he annotated. The run of the edition is not known, but it is considered to be scarce, and is therefore rare and important. ..." (Nordenskiöld)

ROSS, Capt. John - ROSS, Commander James Clark

To His Most Excellent Majesty William Ivth. King of Great Britain, Ireland &c. This Chart of the Discoveries made in the Arctic Regions, in 1829, 30, 31, 32 & 33.

Original colour; restored and backed with archival tissue, large tear (repaired), short tears to margins (repaired), section of margin missing top right, some print offset and discolouration, otherwise presentable condition.
A highly interesting map of the Arctic regions centred around Boothia Felix and King William's Land. The ill fated Franklin expedition took along with them not only the latest technology, but also the latest maps available. Many of these being Admiralty charts by John Arrowsmith & Co. Unfortunately, the latest surveys of the area that Franklin would be exploring contained grave errors which would ultimately seal his fate. The first error was that of James Ross who, in his trip to what he called "King William Land" on the Ross Expedition of 1829-33, required that they traverse both land and water, in many cases mistaking water for land. As a consequence the only viable "Northwest Passage," which lay to the east of King William, was falsely regarded as a dead-end bay, shown on maps as "Poctes Bay" (including this one). Ross came to the conclusion that King William's Land was an extension of Boothia, shown here. Both James and his uncle Sir John Ross persisted in the equally false notion that the "Gulf of Boothia," named by them after their sponsor (Booth's Gin), opened out into the waters at the mouth of the Great Fish River.
