Coloured; minor paper fault to centrefold at lower margin, light age-toning and soiling to margins, otherwise a fine example.
A fine map of Persia after Gastaldi's map of Asia Minor 1564. An interesting note in the text on verso reads (this is taken from the translation of the English text edition of 1606) - In the year of Christ 1369. There was a certaine pety king amongst the Persians, named 'Sophi', who held the city 'Ardenelim' in his possession. This man bragged that he was descended lineally by his ancestors from 'Musa Cazino', nephew of 'Ali Muhamed'. He, the chalise of Babylon being dead, & the contrary faction maintained by the Turks, suppressed by the Tartars, began more boldly and freely to broach his opinions of religion: and because 'Hocemus', the sonne of Aly. From whom he draweth his pedigree, had twelve sonnes, minding to set some marke or badge upon his sects and disciples, whereby they might be distinguished an
own from others, he ordained that they would follow him, and be of his religion, should weare a tire under the vaile, which all the Turks do wind about their heads (they call it 'Tulibant') should be of purple colour, and should hang out the middle of the 'Tulibant' twelve hand breadth. (sic).

Antwerp, 1592, Latin text edition. 340 x 510.
Finely coloured; light marginal soiling, slight show-through of text from verso in upper margin, otherwise a fine example.
One of the most decorative maps of Portugal available and also one of the earliest. This appears to be the second plate produced for the atlas, 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarrum', although this example does not match the description in van den Broecke exactly. Although the flow lines in the River Douro, hairy face in cartouche and sea monster and windows on buildings in the city of Porto all indicate 2nd plate, there is no stippling behind the sea names as described. Also the hachuring in the scale blocks along the bottom is vertical as per the first plate. The page number on the verso indicates post 1592.

PETRINI, Paolo.
Il Teatro del la Guerra...
Naples, 1703. 445 x 665.
Coloured; some soiling mainly to margins and minor repairs, otherwise quite good.
A map of the Netherlands during the War of the Spanish Succession. In this theatre of war the French, together with the garrisons of the Spanish Netherlands had fortified a line of defence over 70 miles long between Antwerp and Huy. Marlborough concentrated 60,000 men (only 12,000 British) about Nijmwegen in June and in early July advanced directly by Hamont on Diest. Boufflers fell back, in order to regain the Brabant lines. Marlborough's objective was to bring about a confrontation and awaited the arrival of Boufflers tired army. But at the critical moment the Dutch authorites forbade the battle, content to see the army that had threatened Holland with invasion driven off to a safe distance without bloodshed. After this Marlborough thought to pacify the Dutch by besieging the fortresses along the River
e and the campaign closed with the capture of Liege, Oct 12 1702.
