STOCKLEIN, Joseph S.J.

Strom Maragnon Auctore R.P. Samuele Fritz è Soc. Jesu. Prov. Bohem, 1707, Delineatus.

Augsburg, 1726. 215 x 345.
Uncoloured; expertly repaired and laid on thick paper, some spotting, now stable and a presentable example
A map of the Amazon and the northern parts of South America by Samuel Fritz, born in Bohemia c.1654. Fritz joined the Society of Jesuits in 1673. In 1674 he received a Ph.D. from Charles University in Prague for Master of Arts. In 1683 the Order sent him as a missionary in the Spanish colonies of the upper Amazon. Between 1689-91 he made his famous trip to Amazonas Pará. Poorly equipped with instruments, he completed a comparatively accurate chart of the river's course. This was the first approximately correct chart of the Marañon territory.

Tabula Californiæ. Anno 1702. Ex autoptica observatione delineata a R.P. Chino e S.I.

Augsburg, 1726. 355 x 230.
Uncoloured; expertly repaired and laid on thick paper, now stable and a presentable example
Eusabio Kino's seminal map of California, the map credited with ending the myth of California as an Island. Published in volume 1 of Joseph Stocklein's [fl. 1726-1748] 'Neue Welt Blott', a German translation of the Lettres 'edifiantes et curieuses. . .' of the Jesuit missionaries. The map was issued at the beginning of the push to establish Jesuit Missions in California, which were first founded in 1697 and later stretched up most of the California coast. Kino's map carefully records the results of nine journeys he made in northwestern Mexico and along the Colorado River. On one of these, sighting only land to the west from an elevation near the head of the Colorado River, Kino declared unequivocally that California was part of the North American continent. Although progressive European Cartographers ado Kino's geography, the California-as-an-island myth was not fully dispelled until 1746 when another Jesuit, Father Consag, provided conclusive proof.

California is shown as an island, the coast of Australia is quite advanced and Van Diemens Land named. There is also a huge land-mass in the south, with the Beach named. It ran to a second state for the 'Carte de Geographie' and a third state with the date altered to 1686 (this example).

WALDSEMMÜLLER, Martin - FRIES, Laurent.

Tabu Nova Orbis.

Lyons, Melchior and Gaspar Trechsel, 1535. 320 x 460.
Uncoloured woodblock; some expert restoration to centrefold, visible when held up to the light and from the verso. Some soiling and staining to margins, otherwise overall a very good example.
This map of the world was the second modern world map in Fries' Ptolemaic atlas. It is a reduced version of the Waldseemüller map originally published in 1513, but lacks the criss-cross directional lines and shows only parts of the Americas to the very west of the map. Fries has added five throned effigies of kings, representing those of Russia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Taprobana and Mursuli. There is also an elephant, or possibly a mammouth placed just off the coast of Greenland. The editor of this edition, Michael Villanovanus, better known as Servetus, was tried for heresy in 1553. He was executed and many copies of this book and others by him were burned by order of Calvin. The woodcut borders and ornaments are said to be the work of Hans Holbein.

Edward Wells, mathematician, geographer and divine was born 1667 and died 1727. Educated at Westminster school and later at Christchurch Oxford. A teacher of geography, he dedicated his atlas to William, Duke of Gloucester. This map, engraved by M. Burghers, features the island of California, named New Albion, discovered by Sir Francis Drake anno 1577. The general outline of the continent follows Father Louis Hennepin's cartography with the discoveries in the Mississippi valley attributed to him. However, the map makes use of fresh sources, especially in the region under English control. Several English settlements are located along the eastern seaboard. A New French Settlement in the mouth of the Mississippi relates to d'Iberville's colony at Biloxi, founded in 1699. The most notable alteration in the interior is the Ohio River, which is named the Hotico R. It is shown flowing through the Apalachin M., which inexplicably run east-west in an arc that encloses the Spanish possessions of Florida. The Northwest consists of Parts as yet unknown, the Great Lakes are rather distorted, and a large mythical lake still appears in Carolina. This is the third state of the plate with additional names added to the Great Lakes.

Also "Land seen by Kemp" and "D'Urville's discovery 1840". Fascinating to think that this map was produced only five years after the James Clark Ross expedition of 1839 in the ships Erebus and Terror. His second in command F.R.M. Crozier, who, with both the ships, was to disappear on Franklin's tragic expedition in 1845. The known geography of the region was to remain virtually unchanged for nearly 60 years and it was not until 1900 that the Royal Geographical Society commissioned an expedition under Robert Scott (1868-1912).

Freetown, Sierra Leone was established as a land of settlement for freed Black slaves from North America. Laws prohibiting the slave trade had been passed in 1807 in both Britain and the United States, but enforcement was poor. African Chiefs and Kings were active participants in capturing, enslaving and trading their fellow beings. Attempts were made by the Governors of Sierra Leone to establish commercial trade; one of these was with the Fula of Timbo. Brian O’Beirne, Assistant Staff Surgeon, made an eventful trip from Freetown to Timbo in 1821. A two sheet map joined with a canvas strip, as published.
