This squarer representation of the island was used in many of the Dutch produced atlases. An elephant and a wild boar are part of the decoration, together with ships and compass roses in the sea area. This map is quite different from the earlier editions of Gerard Mercator.

Bowles's New One-Sheet Map of the Cormandel Coast.

London, Bowles & Carver, 1794-98. 470 x 560, each sheet.
Original body colour: light age-toning to centrefold, some small dark brown spots in the upper margins (possibly caused by rust or tannin from binding), otherwise a fine example.
A fine large scale two sheet map of the Cormandel Coast of India, from south of the river delta at Caveri (Kaveri) to Palicate (Pulicat Lake) on the lower sheet and from Palicate to Narsapur, north east of Asuli Patnam (Machilipatnam) and False Divi Point. The map shows the roads between towns, mountain ranges and rivers. Published in 'Bowles's Universal Atlas, Being a Complete Collection of New and Accurate Maps'. As to why this map is entitled "one" sheet when there are two is not clear, however the two sheets can be joined if the lower margin of the top sheet is trimmed off. Each sheet has a latitude scale at the sides, but no border to upper or lower edges.

A map of India but also covering Pakistan, Tibet, Bangladesh, Burma (Myanmar), inset map of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and a very intricate Himalayan Range. Mount Everest (Chomolungma) is clearly marked, having been measured by Sir George Everest in 1841 at 28,028 feet, in 1999 is was found to be 6 feet higher. Shows the southern tip and Ceylon and as far north as Afghanistan and beyond. Shows also Nepal, Tibet and Bhotan [sic].
