Original body colour; slightly dis-coloured centre due to guard paste, also minor restoration to small split at lower centrefold, otherwise good. Most of the detail of this map of China has been taken from the van Loon Survey, used by Blaeu and Jansson a century earlier, although the southern islands of Japan have been added. The style of the engraving has progressed, making the map look typical of German maps of the eighteenth century, with a highly decorative figured title cartouche in bottom right.

The pagination letter "S" is ink mss. Closely copied from Ortelius, there is a note on Korea stating that there is doubt whether it is an island or part of the mainland. A fine map.

The islands of Japan by Philippe Briet (1601-68) a Jesuit from Abbeville. Briet published atlases in 1648-49 and 53, none of which contained a map of Japan. This example, a later state with the addition of Ou Saycock (Kyushu) and ou Tokoesi (Shikoku) probably comes from the Nicholas Sanson atlas.

Uncoloured; lightly soiled and minor staining, otherwise good.
Three unusual plans of Japanese cities, Miaco, Osaka and Yedo. Postcard in size and highly detailed with keys and titles in Japanese. Very little information on these can be found but it would appear that they were possibly published by OKADA, Shuntosai, in his shop in Suigetsudo in Kyoto during the Edo-jidai period, which ran from 1603 to 1867. However, these appear to be prints from a copper plate which was quite unusual for Japan and could well be printed in the mid-19th century.

Engraved by Francis Lamb for Speed's Prospect of the World. Although the Prospect first appeared in 1627 (two years before Speed's death), this map only appeared in the 1676 edition. It shows the East Indies from Formosa and the Philippines to the Indus. On the verso is a two-page English text "The Description of India".
