The precise attribution of this 'modern' map of the Biitish Isles, set in a page of text, is vague, it is often given as the work of Giovanni Magini, others say Girolamo Porro. It follows loosely the outline of the Mercator - Ortelius representations, but with a stunted outline for Scotland. Although it first appeared in 1596, this example probably came from the Italian work 'Studium Sapientiae Universale published in 1657.

A Venetian edition of the map of the British Isles by Bellin, although Santini gives credit in the cartouche to Janvier. From the "Atlas Universel" published by Santini in 1776-84. The atlas is effectively an Italian copy of the Robert de Vaugondy 'Atlas Universel'. In 1784 Santini sold the plates to M. Remondini. A fine decorative title cartouche top left, and an inset map of the Orkney and Shetland Islands top right.

Finely hand coloured; light age-toning, minor repair to upper and lower centrefold in the margin, expertly repaired, slight thinning of paper in the centrefold area, only visible when held up to the light, otherwise overall a very good example.
From Speed's Prospect of the most Famous Parts of the World, from 1627. Engraved by Cornelius Danckertz who has virtually copied a prototype map by Speed, probably issued as a separate publication between 1601-03. The content of the two maps are the same: invasions and internal strife 1066-1588, culminating with the Spanish Armada, which fills the English Channel but gradually diminishes to mastless wrecks to the north of Ireland.
