Mercator's map of England and Wales is on a larger scale than his map of the British Isles, because of this he is able to include more place names. The precise attribution of this 'modern' map of the Biitish Isles, set in a page of text, is vague, it is often given as the work of Giovanni Magini, others say Girolamo Porro. It follows loosely the outline of the Mercator - Ortelius representations, but with a stunted outline for Scotland. Although it first appeared in 1596, this example probably came from the Italian work 'Studium Sapientiae Universale published in 1657.

A map of western Europe, primarily shows the tidal flows and currents of the North Atlantic, shows the islands of Iceland, the mythical Frisland and Nova Zembla [sic] erroneously position above Scandinavia. Also shows the coast of America, in a very sketchy form. Athanasius Kircher was a celebrated Jesuit scholar, this map was published in his 'Mundus Subterraneus' a scientific work on ocean currents, chasms and volcanoes.

Shirley states in his book 'Early Printed Maps of the British Isles 1477-1650' - "When coloured in the best contemporary tradition, Bleau's map is one of the finest available".

De L'Isle's general map of the British Isles, produced at the beginning of his career. For the time it is fairly accurate and based on latest information from Speed for England and Wales, Pont for Scotland, and Petty for Ireland. The decorative cartouche is of a nautical theme with Neptune, fishing nets, sea-birds, mermaids and sea-horses. This is state 4 of the plate according to Shirley.

A highly detailed and beautifully engraved map of the British Isles, flanked by two views of London and Edinburgh and undeneath these, two medallion portraits. The Royal coat of arms is shown above the London view, flanked by cherubs and an inset of the Orkney Islands is arranged in a similar fashion above the Edinburgh view. Engraved by Jodocus Hondius.

Original outline colour; one or two small dark stains on the map, possibly tanin. Some small marginal nicks and two short repaired tears to side margins, just to the printed border, upper margin trimmed close, but with enough blank paper to facilitate framing, otherwise a very good example.
A separately published two sheet (joined) map of England and Wales by William Berry, can sometimes be found in later Berry atlases. This is a re-engraving of the John Adams's reduced version of his large distance map with straight lines between towns. The title at the top of this map differs slightly from the one in the cartouche. Dedicated to William III, this is the second state, the first is dedicated to James II.
