Fine original colour; some soiling and staining mainly to the margins, but with some on the printed surface, slight centrefold wear in places, otherwise very good.
One of two views of Antwerp found in the 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum' (vol. I). Shows the City at the height of its power in the mid 16th Century prior to its decline in the latter part during the Dutch religious wars. The City was not only important for trade and commerce but was also the centre of engraving, publishing and mapmaking in Europe. This view shows the City at the time when Ortelius, de Jode, Plancius, Hoefnagel and Franz Hogenberg lived and worked there. A dedication in the cartouche bottom right to the Duke of Alba, commander of the Spanish forces in the Netherlands.

The famous University City of Leiden, an interesting engraving, the city itself surrounded by a high defensive wall and moat, with interconnecting waterways. The town of Katwijk aan Zee is marked on the coast, top left, with the fortified village of Voorschoten bottom left. >From volume II of Braun and Hogenberg's 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum', the first collection of town plans.
