MERCATOR, Gerard.

Lutzenburgensis Ducatus.

Amsterdam, Jodocus Hondius & Johannis CLOPPENBURG, 1630. 190 x 250.
Coloured; slight age-toning of paper, cut close at left margin, with minor loss of printed line border, some short marginal nicks and tears repaired, otherwise good.

ORTELIUS, Abraham.

Lutzenburgensis Ducatus Vet:riss Descript. Iacobo Surhonio Montano auctore.

Antwerp, 1584, Latin text edition. 370 x 495.
Finely coloured; light marginal age-toning, short centrefold split to top margin (repaired), otherwise a fine example.
Jacques Surhon surveyed Luxembourg for Charles V of Spain in 1551, shortly after Charles had taken the Duchy from the French (1544). However, because of the sensitive nature of the manuscript, it was not published immediately: only when Antwerp briefly came out from under Spanish control in 1579 did Ortelius feel able to engrave this version.
VAN DEN BROECKE: 60, first state of four.

A map of Luxemberg and surrounding area, with highly decorative figured cartouche.
