A fine map showing Oslo Fjord, with the old name Christania. A very decorative mining scene takes up almost one third of the sheet on the right-hand side, showing heavy lifting machinery, smelting and an early centrifugal pump. The map extends south almost to Fredrikstad and clearly shows the town of Mosi (Moss). The original colour follows the border between Norway and Sweden. Decorative title cartouche adorned with cherubim.

Sebastian Munster's 'Cosmography' first appeared in 1544 and subsequently went into many editions. This small map of Scandinavia set in a page of text, covers Norway, Sweden and Finland with the northern tip of Denmark and parts of the Baltic States and names Riga.

A good example of one of the most famous and decorative maps of Iceland, drawn by Georgio Carolo. Notes in the text on verso refer to the Ile of Gardart (sic), from the name of the first discoverer. And that Ptolemy called it Thule and that he took the name from a King of Egypt.

Finely coloured, possibly some original; very minor marginal soling and toning, small rust hole expertly filled and hardly noticable from the front. Otherwise fine.
This influential map of the North Atlantic shows Britain and Scandinavia; with Greenland, Iceland and the American coast, it also includes the legendary islands of 'Frisland', 'Drogeo' and 'Icaria' amongst others, together with a large land-mass at the North Pole. It seems Ortelius drew heavily on earlier authorities like Mercator's world map of 1569, the Zeno map of the north (1558) and the Olaus Magnus 'Carta Marina' of 1539.

Caricature map, published in "Geographical Fun. Humorous Outlines of Various Countries"', priced five shillings. The map was supposedly drawn by a fifteen year old girl, with the verse underneath by 'Aleph', a pseudonym for William Harvey (1796-1873). He was a popular journalist and author of 'London Scenes and London People...', published in 1863. In 1863 Princess Alexandra of Denmark married the Prince of Wales: here she is shown as a skater resting on the snow, harried by various "unclean beasts that grin below".

Engraved by Evert S˙mons van Hamersvelt for Speed's Prospect of the World, this map has six bird's-eye views of cities, including Copenhagen, Elsinor, Landeskrone, Ripen, Schleswig and Hamburg. Either side of these are portraits of King Christian IV of Denmark and his son Prince Frederick Christian, heir to Norway. The side borders have ten costumed figures. On the verso is a two-page English text "The Description of the Kingdom of Denmark".

Coloured; light marginal soiling and age-toning, minor nicks to the edges of the paper, otherwise a good example.
Engraved by Evert S˙mons van Hamersvelt for Speed's Prospect of the World, this map has six bird's-eye views of cities, including Copenhagen, Elsinor, Landeskrone, Ripen, Schleswig and Hamburg. Either side of these are portraits of King Christian IV of Denmark and his son Prince Frederick Christian, heir to Norway. The side borders have ten costumed figures. On the verso is a two-page English text "The Description of the Kingdom of Denmark".

Original colour, with some recent embellishment; centrefold strengthened, some slightly thinner areas of paper, visible when held up to the light, some spotting, mostly confined to the margins, old ink manuscript annotations in the left margin, light toning to paper at the edges of the margins, otherwise a good example.
A superb map of Iceland by Moses Pitt, after the style of Blaeu and Jansson, the later being given the acknowledgement on the cartouche, Jansson & Waesberg. The last of the Janssons' had died in 1660 and the business was left to his widow and three sons-in-law, the brothers Waesberg. Pitt's project of a 12 volume 'English Atlas' of the World was doomed to fail, completing only 4 volumes, he ended up in debtors prison 1689-91, and died in 1696. Maps by Moses Pitt are uncommon, many suffer severe damage by verdigris in the green colour on the poorer quality paper used for this publication.
