A plan of Fort St. Philippe on the Balaeric Island of Minorca. The English had captured Minorca in 1708 and built Fort St. Philippe, the most expensive fortification ever built by them. This siege ended with the French capturing the island in 1756 (despite the efforts of Admiral Byng, who was shot for his failure); however the French were forced to return it at the end of the Seven Years' War.

The part of Andalucia centred on Sevilla, with Cadiz and Corduba also shown. The second plate with overall stippling in the sea area (after 1595). From the rare English text edition of the 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum'. Marcel van den Broecke records that Skelton's estimate of a 1000 copies of this edition is probably much too high. A number of 250 seems more likely. Compare this number with up to 7000 examples of some of the other Ortelius maps produced. Unlike others editions of the atlas this one was produced by first printing the plates in Antwerp and then adding the text in London. The text was printed by John Norton and John Bill. RARE.

Two views on one sheet, the top one of the Andalucian coastal town of Conil de la Frontera, near Cadiz. The view shows the preparation of fish, a man can be seen hacking away at what is probably a pile of salt and then the storage in barrels. The lower one the centre of the sherry production area at Jerez de la Frontera. In the foreground can be seen two mounted horsemen with lances and shields and a couple dressed in the fineries of contemporary costume. From volume II of Braun and Hogenberg's 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum', the first collection of town plans.

The vessels in the foreground have indistinguishable flags and it is not clear who the attacking force is. However, it is a fascinating engraving.

One of the most decorative maps of Portugal available and also one of the earliest. This appears to be the second plate produced for the atlas, 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarrum', although this example does not match the description in van den Broecke exactly. Although the flow lines in the River Douro, hairy face in cartouche and sea monster and windows on buildings in the city of Porto all indicate 2nd plate, there is no stippling behind the sea names as described. Also the hachuring in the scale blocks along the bottom is vertical as per the first plate. The page number on the verso indicates post 1592.
