"One of the most important maps of the North American continent" - William P.Cumming. This edition published by Covens & Mortier remains unchanged from the original edition of 1718. The first detailed map of the Gulf region and the Mississippi, the first printed map to show Texas [Mission de los Teijas establie en 1716], the first to show the land routes of earlier centuries - De Soto in 1539 and 1540 and his successor Moscoso in 1542, Cavelier in 1687, Tonty in 1702 and the recent routes of Denis in 1713 and 1716. The map had political implications and outraged the English by laying claim to Carolina "so named in honour of Charles 9th by the French who discovered it and took possession and established themselves in 15..." and as a further insult, "Charles Town [Carolina] named by the French Carlefort".

The first edition of J. Leopold Imbert's map of the Theatre of War in North America, showing the British Colonies in North America and extending to Mississippi River Valley. Imbert's map is best known in the econd edition, which credits J.B. Eliot as the map maker. J.B. Eliot's map of the United States is one of the very few to address the boundaries of the United States based upon Article II of the Provisional Treaty between the Americans and the British, negotiated and signed in Paris by Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, John Jay, and Henry Laurens for the Americans on November 30, 1782. Jean-Baptiste Eliot was one of the French military engineers sent to join the staff of George Washington shortly after France's alliance with the Americans was officially recognized in May, 1778. Eliot's unique role as on
the "Ingenuers des Etats Unis" may have allowed him early access to the details of the Provisional Treaty before it left Paris. In preparing his Provisional Treaty map, Eliot utilized the Imbert map as a basic template. The red lines on the present map are of great interest, reflecting the borders of the settled area of the former Thirteen Colonies, plus Nova Scotia ("Acadie") and Newfoundland, the latter two being Loyalist strongholds that remained British colonies. The large inset in the lower right of the map features the Floridian peninsula, the Bahamas and the Greater Antilles, lands still controlled by various European powers.

A teacher of geography, he dedicated his atlas to William, Duke of Gloucester. This map, engraved by M. Burghers, features the island of California, named New Albion, discovered by Sir Francis Drake anno 1577. The general outline of the continent follows Father Louis Hennepin's cartography with the discoveries in the Mississippi valley attributed to him. However, the map makes use of fresh sources, especially in the region under English control. Several English settlements are located along the eastern seaboard. A New French Settlement in the mouth of the Mississippi relates to d'Iberville's colony at Biloxi, founded in 1699. The most notable
alteration in the interior is the Ohio River, which is named the Hotico R. It is shown flowing through the Apalachin M., which inexplicably run east-west in an arc that encloses the Spanish possessions of Florida. The Northwest consists of Parts as yet unknown, the Great Lakes are rather distorted, and a large mythical lake still appears in Carolina. This is the third state of the plate with additional names added to the Great Lakes.

STOCKLEIN, Joseph S.J.
Tabula Californiæ. Anno 1702. Ex autoptica observatione delineata a R.P. Chino e S.I.
Augsburg, 1726. 355 x 230.
Uncoloured; expertly repaired and laid on thick paper, now stable and a presentable example
Eusabio Kino's seminal map of California, the map credited with ending the myth of California as an Island. Published in volume 1 of Joseph Stocklein's [fl. 1726-1748] 'Neue Welt Blott', a German translation of the Lettres 'edifiantes et curieuses. . .' of the Jesuit missionaries. The map was issued at the beginning of the push to establish Jesuit Missions in California, which were first founded in 1697 and later stretched up most of the California coast. Kino's map carefully records the results of nine journeys he made in northwestern Mexico and along the Colorado River. On one of these, sighting only land to the west from an elevation near the head of the Colorado River, Kino declared unequivocally that California was part of the North American continent. Although progressive European Cartographers ado
Kino's geography, the California-as-an-island myth was not fully dispelled until 1746 when another Jesuit, Father Consag, provided conclusive proof.
