Vue de la Riviere D'Endeavour sur la Cote de la Nouvelle Hollande...

COOK, Capt. James.

Origin: Paris, 1774.

An engraving by William Byrne done after a lost drawing likely by Sydney Parkinson in 1770. Parkinson was a Scottish botanist and natural history artist employed by Joseph Banks on Cook's first Endeavor voyage to the Pacific from 1768-1771. In June 1770 the 'Endeavour' was badly damaged running aground on the Great Barrier Reef. The ship limped into Endeavour River on the coast of New South Wales for repair. Here it was 'lightened' and 'careened' so that the damage could be repaired. Probably published in a French edition of Hawkesworth's important work "An Account of the Voyages... for making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere".

Condition: Uncoloured; light surface soiling and age-toning to the edges of the paper, signs of vertical folds from book, otherwise a good example.

Size: 240 x 405mm (9½ x 16 inches).
