Austriae Descrip. Wolfgangum Lazium.

ORTELIUS, Abraham.

Origin: Antwerp, 1606, English text edition.

A map of Austria, the second of two plates, this one was introduced in 1595. From Ortelius's 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum', drawn by Wolfgang Lazius 1514-1565. From the rare English text edition of the 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum'. Marcel van den Broecke records that Skelton's estimate of a 1000 copies of this edition is probably much too high. A number of 250 seems more likely. Compare this number with up to 7000 examples of some of the other Ortelius maps produced. Unlike others editions of the atlas this one was produced by first printing the plates in Antwerp and then adding the text in London. The text was printed by John Norton and John Bill. RARE.

Condition: Fine original colour; thin paper area at centrefold visible when held up to the light, other minor marginal soiling otherwise good.

Size: 350 x 485mm (13¾ x 19 inches).

Reference: 6719

Price: £280
