Two engravings on one sheet depicting the Cathedral & St.Mark's Square, Venice and the other shows the fierce fire that engulfed the Doge's Palace in 1577. After Georg Hoefnagel and published in Braun & Hogenberg's 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum'.

Condition: Uncoloured; light marginal soiling and age-toning, a couple of light brown spots, possibly rust, two small worm holes in the lower margin well away from the printed area, otherwise a fine example.

HOMANN HEIRS.

Origin: Nürenberg, c.1771.

A finely detailed map and evocative view of Venice showing the Grand Canal and its network of smaller canals and bridges, with many of them named. The six sestieri, or divisions of the city are indicated, but the names are not given. An alphanumeric key to the lower right locates the important buildings within the Serene Republic and below the plan is a lovely view of the approach to Venice from the Adriatic.

Condition: Fine original colour; light marginal soiling, printers crease across bottom left corner, minor spotting, otherwise a fine example.

TALLIS, John.

Origin: London, J & F Tallis, 1851.

With vignettes of St. Peter's Rome and the Grand Canal Venice. John Tallis is without question one of the most renowned cartographers and publisher of the C19th. His maps are the last of the lavishly decorated and ornamental maps, considered to be works of art as well as geographically accurate. He was born in Stourbridge in Worcestershire in about 1818 and it is likely that he stayed in the Midlands working as a publisher in Birmingham, until he moved to London in the early 1840′s.
